Safety Precautions for Your Child's Room: Beds & Fall Prevention

Childproofing. It may include outlet covers, but it certainly doesn't end there. And just as today's children's furniture pieces often include tech-friendly details like cord access and built-in charging stations, safety considerations for today's kids extends past the things that pose an immediate physical threat. But today we're going to focus on choosing a bed with fall prevention in view.

The CDC reports that falls are the leading cause of nonfatal injuries for children ages 14 and younger. Approximately 2.8 million US children visit emergency rooms each year due to fall-related injuries. A common culprit in the bedroom that can increase the risk of falls is a bed, especially those that are raised higher than average, such as a Bunk Bed or Loft Bed.

Considerations for Bed Style Choices

It's important to realize that no one bed style is necessarily problematic on its own; if you choose to use a Bunk Bed or Loft Bed, make sure your child is ready, first. (The Sleep Products Safety Council recommends a minimum age of 6.)

If your child isn't ready for scaling heights quite yet, but you need to maximize floor space, check out our Low Loft styles, Platform Beds, or Storage Beds. If you need to provide sleep space for more than one child, a Trundle Bed may be a better option.

Precautions for Bunk Beds and Loft Beds

If you're confident that your child is ready for a Bunk Bed or Loft Bed, you still need to make sure you choose your child's elevated bed carefully:

• Be sure it includes continuous guard rails along the wall side and contains no openings large enough for your child's head, torso, or limb to pass through
• Always use a low-profile mattress
• Consider a Staircase-Style Bed and/or Slide Bed for safe, easy ascent and descent

Suggestion for Changing Bed Needs

Our premier line, Maxtrix® offers extremely safety-conscious bed solutions. This innovative system offers a few unique safety features:

• Extra high guard rails
• Extra deep ladder steps
• Option of staircase or angled ladder with rail for all Bunk Beds and Loft Beds
• Rock Lock connection bolt for especially stable connections

In addition to those safety-conscious characteristics, the Maxtrix bed is unusual in its ability to transform from a low-to-the-ground Basic Bed or Day Bed to a Loft Bed or Bunk Bed.

In addition, you can choose a variety of heights for your Maxtrix Loft or Bunk Bed, ranging from low to high. Bunk Bed designs can also incorporate several Maxtrix beds in a variety of configurations.

Even if you make sure to purchase the safest bed possible for your child, it's important to teach your child that a bed is made for sleeping, not playing. If your child loosens or breaks a part of the bed, he or she could be at risk. Be sure to follow up by routinely inspecting your child's bed for any problems that might compromise safety.
