The Chemistry of a Happy Family, Part 2

In Part 1, we looked at 2 of the 4 chemicals our bodies use to send us to our "happy places." Because of the science behind this information, you can learn how to create more of a happy atmosphere in your home and with your family, no matter what your past looks like or your natural inclinations may be.

Serotonin for Families

Serotonin basically intensifies whatever mood you're in — for good or for bad. Did you know that 80% of the body's Serotonin is found in the gut and is connected to how hungry you are? So, yes, being "hangry" is a real thing. Perhaps this is part of the reason that eating meals together as a family is so important: We associate that contented feeling of having our physical hunger satisfied with the people with whom we share the table. We may increase this kind of Serotonin high by cooking and creating meals together and delighting in various flavors and favorite recipes and restaurants.

Somewhere, there's a balance between eating "comfort food" and getting the nutrients our bodies need to function optimally, but that's beyond the scope of today's post. In the meantime, realize that food isn't just a necessity for healthy bodies; it's also part of healthy, happy relationships. When we take care to feed our families, we're nourishing their hearts as well as their bodies.

Endorphins for Families

Endorphins are associated with our "fight or flight" mechanisms and can create either positive or negative emotions connected to family. If a person feels stressed or threatened, physically or emotionally, when surrounded by family members, then endorphins can work to decrease the desirability of family time. If kids are always made to sit still and remain quiet, they'll likely feel the angst of built-up endorphins, with no place to go.

On the other hand, endorphins can be released through exercise and active play, so when your family works hard or plays sports together, you're enjoying this hormonal high. This is a good reason to make sure your family pastimes include more than sedentary togetherness like commuting and movie going. Be sure to include activities like hiking, swimming, skating, and skiing! In a pinch, a good, old-fashioned (playful) tickle fest or wrestling match can work, as well.

Family time is important, and if you spend it carefully, you can maximize its potential for positive emotions and long-term family connectedness. Being intentional about it requires a little effort and creativity, but it doesn't have to mean breaking the bank. To remember the means of releasing the 4 "happy place" chemicals, just think of the acronym "A FAM": Anticipation, Food, Activity, Meaningful connecting. If you make a point to infuse your family culture with those four things, science is on your side!
