We understand as parents how important it is to create memories with our children. But how can we capture a fleeting beautiful moment and transform it into a priceless memory we'll both never forget? It is in fact based on science, some of which is still poorly understood. We do know, however, that by using all of our senses and living in the present, we may freeze moments in time so they will stay in our minds for years or even decades. Repetition helps memory, just as it does with effective learning. How can we use this memory science to provide our kids with a treasure trove of enduring memories? We'll simplify it into three easy stages.

Numerous Pathways, Many Senses

Although every child has distinct primary and secondary learning tendencies, information "sticks" in the brain more when there are multiple channels for it to travel through. Strong emotions are significantly more likely to be preserved in situation when there are multiple senses involved in remembering something. When you describe your favorite childhood recollections, you might bring up specific noises, sights, scents, textures, and tastes. Take one scent of strawberry pie, and you'll instantly be transported back in time. That's because the sense of smell, or olfactory bulb, is the one sense that has the most power to evoke feelings and bring back memories.

Complete Focus and Attendance

When we consider our childhood memories, this may be the worst drawback of all the problems associated with our addiction to screens today. We find it more difficult to be totally present in the moment these days, because we are all endlessly distracted by our electronics. And let's be honest: as much as we enjoy the ease of chatting on social media or killing time with pointless games, what we really want is to be with people in person and receive their whole attention. We will be able to make the kind of priceless memories we have always wanted for our children if - and only if - we determine to set aside time to solely focus on them without screens or other distractions. In the end, what matters is how we approach the event, how much attention we pay to it, how much time we spend with our children, and not how much the tickets cost or how far away the location is.

Natural Relationships

The ability to be totally present and permit the impact of multiple senses to imprint the moment on our enduring memory all contributes to the explanation of why encounters with nature tend to induce feelings of calmness and vivid recollections. The innate propensity for children to bond and create memories is only one of the numerous advantages of unstructured outdoor play. These outdoor pleasures don't require much preparation or money, from the sound of autumn leaves moving in the wind to the scent of salt water at the beach and the feel of grass or sand beneath bare feet. However, they benefit recollections.
