Fun in the Sun: Making It a Summer They Won't Forget

As parents, we face a lot of pressure to create beautiful moments. Some of us can become overwhelmed by the expectations of providing our kids with ideal environments, from Pinterest-worthy birthday parties to Instagrammable bedroom décor. But don't worry, I won't add to the pressure you already feel by adding more of that kind. Instead, I'm going to extend an invitation to get you working on four specific goals: (1) Make a short list of the essential summer events you want your kids to remember, (2) add them to your calendar, (3) take pictures of them, and then (4) organize a summer wrap-up to commemorate the good times.

How Do Our Brains Function?

You're right if you believe the 4-step method I just shared sounds a little bit like a teacher's lesson plan. After all, education is the science of relationships. Think back to your favorite or most enduring childhood memories. They might or might not have involved expensive activities or outings, but I'm assuming they did involve a memorable activity or setting that engaged all of your senses, and that you have photos or even a family movie that lets you relive the experience. In fact, it's possible that you remember the stories and pictures more clearly than the actual event. Planning your kids' summer activities should keep that in mind, because they will be treasured memories long after the sand is totally out of your car.

What to Schedule and How

Think twice before adding anything time or money-consuming to your list, such as a trip to Disney World. Making your own bubbles or using sidewalk chalk to play might be quite simple. For us as parents, it's important to concentrate on the activity and our kids' enjoyment of it. Don't let urgent needs interrupt this time; instead, put your phone away (or at the very least, use it exclusively for taking photos to capture memories). It is significant. Be mindful of the fact that less is frequently more as you schedule the items on your list. Don't overbook a day or a week; if you don't give yourself time to unwind, your kids might feel like you're just doing "one more thing," which eliminates the chance that they'll genuinely enjoy it.

Why Take Pictures and Memories

It doesn't matter how many images you take; it also doesn't matter how you share those photos. It really doesn't matter if you make a gorgeous photo book printed on premium paper, order individual prints of your photos, or print your own photos and include them in a photo book from the dollar store. You could also make a straightforward digital slideshow and include a few videos in it to watch them together as a family on movie night. The purpose of taking some photos/videos of each event and putting them simply together is to allow you to relive your favorite summertime experiences. This "replay" time will help you and your children remember these moments and enable you to relive their delights.
