Making Family Relationships a Priority, Part 2

Making family relationships a priority can benefit you and your children academically as well as in other ways. While there is no substitute for consistent, routine times for relationship-building (as we discussed in Part 1), parents can get creative in arranging a setting and planning special events that intentionally celebrate and anticipate closeness in relationships, one of the key elements in a child's academic success.

Environmental Elements

Your home both reflects and impacts your personality and ideals, from furniture to décor, wall colors to pictures. Just as investing in high-quality furniture can convey the value you place on your living space, putting up pictures of your loved ones on the wall or keeping photo albums in plain sight shows how much you respect them. In addition, your surroundings can both reflect and have an impact on the feelings of your family. Several studies have examined the impact of color on mood, but the potential harms of clutter may be even more important.

Activities for Forming Teams

Sure, I am aware that we are discussing families, but every healthy family can meet the criteria for the following definition of a team:
• More than just a collection of people
• A group of people who all contribute to the overall operation.
• A group of people who have come together to work toward a common goal.

Opportunities for teambuilding and community service benefit many businesses and sports teams, and the same can benefit your family. Our families frequently lack harmony because they have no direction. Is the only objective to get through each day, maintain the house, and refrain from injuring one another? Of course, each person in your family has their own interests and obligations. However, what do each of you do? Can you all give up your regular extracurricular activities occasionally in order to pursue new interests or engage in family service? Trust and open communication are strengthened as a result of teamwork, and more gets accomplished.

Special Events

Even in Pinterest-perfect style, holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions and milestones can pass quickly without being properly celebrated or cultivating the family bonds that we place a great value on. We can organize our activities in meaningful ways if we pursue them with a purpose and keep the importance of our family relationships in mind. What customs might you employ to make the holidays a part of your family's values? Can you plan one-on-one outings for each parent-child pair in your family on a rotating basis so that they may get to know one another better? What about a yearly excursion that allows for possibilities for anticipation, planning, and happy memories?

You can develop the family atmosphere and values you want by combining environmental elements, team-building exercises, and special occasions. Your children - and their grades - will undoubtedly improve when you are more deliberate about all these elements of family life.
