If you're the only adult on duty, maybe a swimming day is just too stressful to consider, but it's hot outside, and your kids understandably want a chance to cool off with some good, old-fashioned H2O. You don't need a large body of water or a swimming pool to make that happen. A few simple toys can really get your kids cooled off - and having fun in the process. Pro tip: don't get them all out at once.

Wetness Level 0

If you want your kids to be able to chill without actually getting wet, aquapods like this one might be the right choice. Young children might be content to only get their hands wet, splashing around with these little fish and a net (or a make-shift version using items you already have on hand) and a small container filled with water.

Wetness Level 1

Depending on your kids' ages, they may or may not be content with just a bucket of water and splash balls like these. If they need a little guidance, and you don't want them attacking each other, you can run a relay by which they carry the water-soaked balls to one another, trying to get a container filled to a certain level. Depending on how many kids are participating and their ages, you can add a little more challenge to this kind of activity. Alternatively, you could do it with just ladles or other items that you have on hand.

Wetness Level 2

If you're giving in and are comfortable with your kids soaking each other, water guns or balloons are always an option. In addition to the standard items in this category, you might want to add a little more to the equation with these throwable paint balls or this set that comes with target vests. If you just want an easily fillable pack of water balloons, check out this set. And shooters like these are classic favorites because they make the water go so far!

Wetness Level 3

On the really wet end of the spectrum, you can always get out the garden sprinkler or buy a kid-specific one. This deluxe version is likely to increase the fun factor in anyone's back yard! For younger kids, this splash pad might be a better fit.

Remember that if you do fill a bucket or kiddie pool with water, be sure to empty it before you leave the area or go inside.
