Rainy Summer Day Idea: Indoor Beach Party

Is there anything worse than planning for a day at the beach, only to wake up to thunder and lightning? (Of course, a little summer rain never hurt anyone, but you definitely don't want to be in the water during an electrical storm!) Okay, so there are definitely worse problems in the world, but to your little one who was looking forward to going to the beach so, so much, the disappointment will be very real. While we agree that there's nothing like the experience of a real beach, there are definitely ways you can plan some beach-themed indoor fun as well.

Get Your Hands Dirty

For some kids, this is the best part of being at the beach! While you don't want to be finding grains of sand all over the house, you can still provide your kids with a chance to make some sand creations with some easy DIY sand dough recipes! (We've talked about the benefits of playing with soft modeling dough before, and adding sand provides an extra sensory perk.) These recipes offer a bit of variety for sand-themed indoor play:

Time To Get Wet

Sand isn't the only part of the beach that you'll be missing! Don't worry: you don't have to install an indoor pool in order to enjoy some water play on a rainy day! Check out these aquatic ideas that don't require an oceanfront setting:

Choose a Themed Book

From silly to scientific, you can find almost as many beach-themed books as the sands on the seashore! Well, maybe not quite — but there are still many out there. Some specifically teach certain academic skills like counting or social skills like controlling anger. This book about the seashore might be our favorite, with its beautiful, calming illustrations that make you feel like you're — well, right where you wish you could be!

Dress the Part

Before you wade into those sensory experiences, why not set the scene by getting your beach clothes on, maybe playing a little ukulele music, and even spraying a little sunblock into the air? You could even eat a picnic lunch by a sunny window, while sitting on a beach towel.

Maybe even more important than the details of your indoor beach party is the fact that you'll be teaching your child how to make the most of a rainy day and disappointment. Depending on the age of your child, you may want to discuss how by planning ahead and determining to make the most of a situation, you can keep from wasting a day. You might want to discuss each person's go-to responses in situations like that, as well.
