It's hot outdoors, and your kids understandably want a chance to cool off with some good, old-fashioned water. However, if you're the only adult on duty, perhaps a swimming day is just too stressful to consider. To make that happen, you don't need a lot of water or a pool. A few inexpensive toys can do wonders for your kids' comfort and enjoyment. And here's a free expert tip: Don't put out all the water toys at once; instead, rotate them for maximum fun!

Beginner Wetness Level

Aquapods can be the best option if you want your kids to be able to relax without really getting wet. Young children might be pleased to splash around with a tiny container of water, a few toy fish, and a net (or a makeshift one made from items you already have on hand).

Minimal Wetness Level

Your children might or might not be pleased with playing only with a bucket of water and some splash balls, depending on their age. If they require some direction and you don't want them attacking one another, you can set up a relay challenge where they pass the wet balls to one another while attempting to fill a container with water to a specific level. You can make this kind of activity a little bit more challenging by adjusting it for the number of children taking part and their ages. As an alternative, you could have the kids use only large soup spoons to walk across the yard to fill the buckets with water or have the children carry the wet balls on top of large plastic serving spoons to give the game an added twist.

Water guns or water balloons are always an option if you're caving in and are okay with your kids getting wet all over. Throwable paint balls could be a good addition to the mix in addition to the guns & balloons. If you simply want a pack of water balloons that is simple to fill, you can buy packs of rapid-filling, self-sealing water balloons from Walmart or a dollar store that simply connect to the faucet and produce a dozen full water balloons in a matter of seconds. And because they can shoot the water so far, waterguns and tube-style water launchers are perennial favorites.

If it's totally wet that you are aiming for, you can always use the garden sprinkler or buy a special elaborate play sprinkler for kids (the options are almost endless). The enjoyment factor in anyone's backyard is certain to enhance with some outdoor water play sprinkler models! Splash pads might be a preferable option to also consider for younger children.

Remember from a water safety perspective to drain any kiddie pools or buckets you may have filled with water before you leave the area or enter a building.
