What does your family do when you're stuck inside this winter? Chances are, you're more likely to veg out in front of the TV together or retreat into your own digital worlds. That's fine for some of the time, but too much can just be too much. And when you mix a little creativity with a smidgen of effort, you might just surprise yourselves and have more fun than you thought you would! If you're ready for a few ideas that also help you get a leg up on this year's resolutions, read on!

Make Purging into a Contest

Many people are resolving to simplify and downsize possessions this time of year. If getting rid of excess things seems like a drudgery, consider making it into a contest! You decide the stakes and the way to win! Examples include greatest number of items purged, highest amount of money made from selling purged items, or most significant transformation of a space. If items are sold, you could pool your money and have a family date night or use it to complete a room transformation, now that your space has been purged of undesirable items.

Work on a Project

The project itself isn't as important as the fact that you're working together to achieve something. Maybe it's a room renovation, as mentioned above, but it doesn't have to be. It could be simply redecorating a wall or painting an old table to be used for future projects: the important part is that everyone gets to help in some way. The project doesn't have to be for your own family, though. Maybe you didn't quite have the time to make handmade gifts for holiday gift-giving, but after the holidays fly by, then you'll have more time on your hands than you know what to do with — then you'll have the time to do some crafting!

From string art to stitchery, painting to paper crafts, there are so many inexpensive creative outlets from which to choose. You can give them to friends or family members as Valentines or save them for next year. Plan ahead for your project times by getting materials while you're out and having an audio book or play list ready to go!

Prepare for Fairer Weather

Another resolution many of us make is to eat healthier, spend less money, or both. We all know that the more homemade meals we make and plan ahead, the more likely we are to eat better and spend less. I don't know about you, but once the weather breaks in the spring, there's so much I'd rather do than get stuck in the kitchen. Especially if you have some extra freezer space, you can prepare food ahead of time by having freezer-cooking sessions in which you make several meal-sized portions of the same foods and freeze them for later use. Just think: If you did this just once a week for three months, making 3 extra meals each time, you'd have 36 meals stockpiled for those great days when you'd rather spend more time outside than in the kitchen.
