Seasonal Rhythms and Why They're Still Important for our Kids

Even though our modern conveniences allow us to function without much heed to natural rhythms like day/night or seasonal changes, we humans still thrive when we pay attention to those cues. While we can easily get any food at any time of year, and there's no rule saying that we have to prepare for or celebrate the various seasons a certain way, we do well to pay attention to nature and incorporate seasonal celebrations — rituals, even - into our children's lives. Those rhythms are actually pretty important. Here's why.

Order from Chaos

I've heard many parents say it recently: Our kids are growing up in a world that's different from the one in which we grew up. Is it better? I don't know. But it definitely seems scarier. Anxiety is on the rise, especially among kids. And you know something that helps ease anxiety for many people? Routines, rituals, regularity. Some kids love adventure and surprises more than others, sure, but just about every single one of them also likes a bit of predictability. Sometimes it's nice to know what's coming. Seasons do that for us, and we can build on those natural predictable cycles to create even more stability for our children.

Healthier Choices

We all get into food ruts, don't we? I know I do. But it can be fun (and budget-friendly) to capitalize on seasonally available fruit and vegetables and to source locally grown ones. According to some studies, our ancestors had more balanced diets in part because they were forced to eat different foods at different times of the year. And cooking real food doesn't have to mean more time away from your child; having children help in the kitchen can be beneficial to their development in many ways. If your own seasonal food selections include mostly pre-packaged snack foods that are associated with different times of the year, then this is a change you and your child can make together, exploring the real foods you both enjoy most.

Joy of Preparation

What are you preparing for this season? Is there a holiday you celebrate? Does someone in your family have a birthday? Are you planning a trip? If your calendar doesn't look too full, could you plan to bless someone special by inviting them into your home for a meal or provide some kind of thank you gift for a group of public servants? Quarterly preparations and calendar meetings can allow you and your child to prepare for what's ahead while making sure the schedule isn't overkill.

By implementing some seasonal rhythms and celebrations, you can help your child maximize the natural rhythms in our world and implement some emotionally and physically healthy habits.
