Maybe you were with me until you got to the "organize" part of this earlier post. It can be intimidating for those of us who don't come naturally to it. But, unlike art, smart organization is a science that can be learned. You'll be better equipped to undertake more purging once you've purged and classified toys into sets or categories. You'll need a plan once you've narrowed down what you want to keep.

Furniture for Storage

At the Bedroom Source, we have many different storage furniture options that work well with other pieces of bedroom furniture, such as our beds & bunks. Many of these storage furniture pieces can be used in your child's bedroom, your living room, or in a play area. Obviously, you won't want to add labels onto furniture like you would label plastic bins, but our storage furniture's clutter-free appearance and coordination with other pieces make it a great choice for the items you want to keep freely accessible for your kids.

Bins & Boxes

You'll undoubtedly have some goods to hide in closets and other areas where you don't care as much about matching wooden dovetailed drawers, in addition to whatever you want to keep accessible and hidden in your kids' rooms or in your living room. Whether you use rubber or plastic totes, unfinished wooden crates, fabric bins, or plain cardboard boxes, these storage options will have varying lifespans due to differences in durability; expect to have to frequently replace cardboard boxes, especially if kids are regularly accessing them. To keep storage containers off the floor, you might want to consider adding wall shelves or even purchase a shelf unit or cube organizer.

Hidden Objects

Just because you aren't getting rid of it doesn't mean your children must have access to it at all times. A locking cabinet or closet can be used to keep toys and games that have a lot of components that you don't want to deal with every day; a lockable cabinet is also perfect for hiding away messy art supplies. Keeping such goods accessible but high up on top shelves can result in older children climbing those shelves and potentially injuring themselves, so you should be cautious about employing this strategy. You may also utilize closed places to store toys on your rotation that you don't want your kids to see right now.

Keeping Up With Everything

There are two key methods for preventing your kid-friendly areas from repeatedly becoming federal disaster areas. You'll need to label containers first. The types of bins or boxes you choose will influence what labels make sense, but labeling each storage container is an excellent way to keep things organized. Using photos of the contents with a one or two-word description can benefit pre-reading children. Another way to keep things ordered is to set out a time or several times each day (maybe right before each meal) for your children to clean up. Having a regular time each week or each month when you go through all of a child's belongings can also be beneficial.
