What's Under Your Child's Bed?

Posted on 01/25/2017

Your child’s bed is arguably the most important piece of furniture in his or her room; after all, your child spends one third to one half of every 24-hour day on it. You want to make sure it’s safe and comfortable, as well as customized to suit your child’s taste. Sadly, as perfectly outfitted as your child’s bed may be — complete with trendy bedding, a favorite “blankie,” extra pillows, and a zoo-worthy collection of stuffed animals — the under-bed area can be a definite problem. Whether that space is currently a source of contention or cause for concern, you can learn to use this extra space in your child’s room for a positive purpose.

Random Stuff

If it’s not stuffed into the closet, it’s under the bed. Why do all children think they’re so sneaky when they shove all kinds of things into these places? At some point, they all need to learn the hard truth that shoving things under their beds is not the same as actually cleaning and organizing their rooms.

This simple bedroom-cleaning chart for kids includes the question, “Is the Floor Clear?” You may have to specify that “the floor” includes the part under the bed. Even the youngest kids can learn to part with too much stuff. For those especially sentimental types, you may offer them a bin of “little kid stuff” to hang onto and maybe a small basket or bucket on their dresser for random “treasures.” But by making the under-bed area off limits, you’re teaching them to limit themselves — and hopefully preventing your child from ever being featured on TLC's “Hoarders.”

Imaginary Monsters

Sometimes monsters can seem very real to kids. While you don’t want to ignore your child’s fears, you do want to eliminate any contributing factors you can. In the meantime, though, you can shine a flash light under the bed — or get more creative and use a “bug swatter” or “bug spray,” as described in this blog. In the spirit of fun, you could also help your child’s imaginary monsters become a little less threatening by introducing him to friendly ones — like Sesame Street's Grover or Mike Wazowski from Monsters, Inc. You could even buy your child some monster pajamas to help ward away the scary ones.

Under-Bed Storage

Another way to keep the area beneath your child’s bed from becoming a hoarding zone or extra cause for anxiety is to use it for storage! The Bedroom Source offers a great selection of Platform Beds, Storage Beds, Trundle Beds, and other beds with under-bed storage units available.
