How To Make the Most of a Child's Small Bedroom

We might all wish we could have Alice's experience in Wonderland, where she enters a room only to find its size quite different than it appears. While we don't really have any magic tricks up our sleeves, we can benefit from some simple design principles to make small rooms avoid looking or feeling cramped. From color choice to textures and other décor choices, you can make even the smallest room appear more spacious than it really is.

Rethinking Color Choices

The first principle of color that can help a small space appear larger is to use light colors, at least for the backdrop — and the less you break up that backdrop, the more spacious the room will seem. While adding some bright pops of color can help make the room seem more kid-friendly, too many dark or bright colors — or too many items in a single bright color — can make a small room appear cluttered, which is pretty easy to do. Try adding items one by one, and youll be able to tell when you're crossing that line from "just right" into the realm of "too much." If you don't want to go with a light, neutral color for the majority of the room, go with warm, natural colors. The room won't appear spacious, but it can feel cozy, rather than cramped.

All About Textures

What a small room design lacks in color, it can add in texture. Texture provides a subtle way to add warmth and variety, something you definitely want if you've decided to go with a primarily light, neutral color for your child's room. Since many children thrive on sensory input and enjoy exploring all the "feels," adding a variety of textiles to a child's room is a definite win-win! Consider adding a variety of throw pillows, blankets, and other materials in your chosen color scheme.

In the world of design, texture isn't just about multi-sensory input, though; it's about adding a dimension to the visual. Pairing contrasting colors (especially in light-dark extremes) to arranging wall art in a pyramid design can create a sense of texture and add a sense of depth to the room.

Keep Looking Up

One way to draw attention away from the small size of a room is to draw the eye upward visually. You can do that with a combination of attention-getting light fixtures, decorative ceiling art, and tall furniture pieces.

Some of our favorite beds for small rooms include these:

Tall, narrow storage pieces like these can also help heighten a small room's appeal:

Of course, mirrors provide an additional way to visually open up a room.
