Salute to a Simple Summer: Preserving Vacation Memories, Part 1

Does your family love the beach? Or do you prefer places with plenty of high-impact activities or entertainment? This year, will you visit far-away family, venture to a new-to-you destination, or opt for a "staycation," instead? Whatever you decide to do, you'll be taking some time to focus on family fun, and you'll want to remember those special experiences. Even if you give in to that cheesy T-shirt in the tourist shop and snap more photos than you'll ever print, you'll want to be intentional about making a few well-chosen mementos and pictures accessible soon after your getaway.

Tip 1: Keep the Goal in View

In so many ways, the convenience of technology is both a blessing and a curse. The fact that it's easy and inexpensive to take gads of photos is definitely one of those ways. If you're like me, you get back from a trip and realize you've taken hundreds of pictures - some on your phone, others on your "better" camera - and you get overwhelmed at the thought of going through them, getting them printed, or scrapbooking them. Who has time for that?! Well, if you're honest, you probably would have time, if you only came up with a simplified approach. If the goal is to preserve a handful of key memories from your trip, not max out your phone's memory, keep that in mind before you go.

Tip 2: Use Vacation Digital Time for Photo Management

Instead of checking Facebook or Pinning vacation ideas for next year, why not take a few minutes to comb through your photos each evening of your trip. Choose a set number of pictures to save — maybe 5 per day or per activity or sight you visited. And delete all the other ones.

If you really can't bear to downsize, you can use a photo-editing app on your phone to create a collage which you can print as a single picture. Many apps also allow you to add text.

Doing all of it on your phone has two distinct benefits: You skip the step of moving your photos to the computer and avoid trying to do it all once you get home, when you'll also be trying to catch up on vacation laundry and get caught back up on work and the rest of real life.

Tip 3: Use Just One Camera and One App

Okay, on the outside chance someone else in your family snaps an awesome photo on a different device, tell them to text or e-mail it to you. That day. Then save it to the same photo album so you have everything together. In case you don't already have an app you love, here are some photo app ideas to get you started:

Just like packing can seem daunting if you aren't prepared but easy if you have prepared, if you've planned ahead for post-vacation projects, you can make them happen, too. Bonus: you extend the vacation fun and get to re-live the smiles a little bit longer.
