What Types of Beds are Available for Kids? Part 1

Posted on 01/11/2018

Obviously, the main ingredient of a child's bedroom is the item mentioned in its name: the bed. This all-important piece of furniture is something around which to build your child's bedroom collection. Some parents start with the look of an individual collection, but another way to decide is to start with the type of bed, then search out collections that include the desired bed style. Below you'll find an overview of the basic bed styles available as well as some reasons why you may decide on that style bed.

Day Beds

While they may be among the least common bed style you can find in any of our collections, Day Beds may be the perfect fit for certain situations. For instance, if you want your child's bedroom to double as a lounge or "hang out" spot, a Day Bed can provide a sleep space by night and sofa-like seating during the day. Some Day Beds incorporate storage or upholstery, as well. Day Beds can also allow a home office to function as a guest room or provide extra sleep space for occasional guests in your child's bedroom.

Iron Beds

Many of the Day Bed styles we carry are also Iron Beds. Named for their composition, these beds are made from iron, rather than the more typical furniture material, wood. Iron Beds offer a distinctly vintage aura that works extremely well in some settings. While most offer an airy, open look, some metal beds — like this traditional bed — display a more solid profile.

Sleigh Beds

Like the Iron Bed, this bed style is low on storage and high on style. Named for their luxurious shape, Sleigh Beds have a classic appeal that may be suitable for your child's bedroom design. Some of these can offer under-bed storage options, but the main appeal is tied to their form, rather than their function.

Platform Beds

By definition, a Platform Bed is simply a bed that incorporates a solid platform, as opposed to a slat roll, on which the mattress can set. Many Platform Beds also incorporate under-bed storage drawers, and some can be classified as Captain's Beds or Storage Beds. A Sleigh Bed or Day Bed could be a Storage Bed as well.

Storage Beds

The term "Storage Bed" is definitely less specific than many bed types and can include Captain's Beds, Panel Beds, Reading Beds, and more. Some are also Platform Beds, while others are slatted. Whether the storage space is under the bed, part of the headboard, both, or elsewhere, the basic idea is that some kind of storage is incorporated into the bed's design.

If you're looking for a bed to allow for extra floor space or additional sleeping space, there are a few more bed types that you may want to consider. We'll check out Bunk Beds, Loft Beds, Trundle Beds, and Slide Beds in our next post.
