What Types of Beds are Available for Kids? Part 2

Posted on 01/11/2018

One way to decide on your child's next Bedroom Collection is to start with the bed style that will work best with your needs and preferences. We looked at several single bed options that are on the "ground level" in Part 1: Day Beds, Iron Beds, Sleigh Beds, Platform Beds, and Storage Beds. As we already discussed, those categories are not necessarily mutually exclusive; similarly, neither are the bed types we'll be discussing below. For instance, a Storage Bed may also be a Day Bed and may also include a Trundle storage drawer; similarly, a Loft Bed may also be a Storage Bed or a Slide Bed.

Trundle Beds

The word "trundle" is rarely used as a verb today, but its archaic usage meant "to roll along" or "to move or run on a wheel or wheels." True to that original meaning, a Trundle Bed includes an under-bed drawer on wheels, rather than drawers running along side drawer guides. These under-bed trundle drawers can be used, with the addition of a second mattress, to provide extra sleep space or with dividers, to allow for extra storage space. Like this Ashley Collection Bookcase Bed or our Mountain Mission Bed, most modern Trundle Beds require separately purchasing a bed and a complementary Trundle unit.

Bunk Beds

Not all Bunk Beds are created equal, that's for sure! Today's Bunk Beds range from Low Bunk Beds and Ladder-Style Bunk Beds to Staircase-Style Bunk Beds and Full-over-Full Bunk Beds.

Other less common options like Corner Loft Bunk Beds, Quad Bunk Beds, and L-Shaped Parallel Bunk Beds are made possible with our ever-popular Maxtrix® Furniture System.

Loft Beds

Similar to Bunk Beds, Loft Beds allow you to maximize each square foot of your child's bedroom. For younger children, Low Loft Beds can provide similar benefits to Storage Beds; however, not all Loft Beds are Storage Beds. Some are more playful Slide Beds or Study Lofts that incorporate desks into the design. Some of our loft beds combine it all by incorporating both study space and your choice of extra opportunities for play and storage.

Convertible Beds

If you simply can't decide on a single bed that will fit your child's ever-changing needs, perhaps our Maxtrix beds would be the choice for you. With the purchase of accessories and other add-ons, the same basic bed can be transformed into a Princess Loft Bed, Staircase Storage Bed, High Study Loft, Daybed with Trundle, and more. Each Maxtrix storage piece can function as a stand-alone piece or in conjunction with your Maxtrix bed.
