Salute to a Simple Summer: Preserving Vacation Memories, Part 3

In Part 1 and Part 2 we covered the basics of organizing and printing your vacation photos for preservation and display. If you're up for a little project and 3-dimensional display, then you're going to love these ideas that preserve your vacation memories in fun new ways!

Collect Keepsakes Along the Way

Do you love the way those wildflowers smell, how those stones feel, how the seashells look, or how the sand feels between your toes? A picture may not do those multi-sensory experiences justice, but keeping a few things that you encounter to pair with photos that depict them can provide the raw material for a 3D display later on. And don't think you have to limit your findings to natural items — anything you or your kids love or that reminds you of a good memory is definitely fair game!

Determine a Project Ahead of Time

While anything can be fair game, the last thing you want to do is get home and decide on a display method, only to realize that you didn't gather enough paraphernalia to fill the space or complete the design. Here are some 3D display ideas the kids will love helping create:

Sand Handprint or Footprint Keepsakes
Frame-Friendly Collage
Salt Dough Ornaments

Keep in mind that any of those items can be the beginning of a collection that you can build on each year! Simply write or paint the location and the year on each one. Bonus point: Any of them would make great Christmas gifts for the grandparents!

If your children are too young or lack interest in helping create keepsakes — or you'd rather just enjoy some kid-free creative time — these ideas might be right for you:

Mini Shadow Box Fridge Magnets: We love that you could easily create one of these for each of your kids! Bonus point: Finding the space to display them is as easy as it gets!
Traditional Wall-Mounted Shadowbox: This is basically a picture frame, but with a 3D aspect to it! You can find ready-made ones at various retailers or create your own.
Glass Block Shadow Box: For those low on wall space but high on bookshelves or other display surfaces, these could work well. Bonus point: you can easily stack them, if you choose to do one each year!
Mason Jar Memory Displays: If you're going for that simple, farmhouse look that is currently so popular and have shelf space that's out-of-reach from young children, these would be a great option!

Our fourth and final installation in this series will take you a little deeper into travel journaling and new traditions to build on each year.
